Tìm hiểu về Interrogatives – Mệnh đề/ câu nghi vấn
Interrogatives – từ nghi vấn là những từ dùng để đặt câu hỏi. Chúng thường được đặt đầu câu (hoặc gần đó), và câu đó sẽ kết thúc bằng dấu hỏi chấm. Một số từ nghi vấn là đại từ như who, whom, whose, what, và which, và chúng có thể đóng vai trò như:
- chủ ngữ của câu
- tân ngữ trực tiếp
- tân ngữ của một giới từ
- sở hữu cách
Cùng xem xét các ví dụ dưới đây:

| Preposition: | With whom was she dancing? About whose was he speaking? To what are you referring? In which is it located? |

Một số các interrogatives khác đóng vai trò như trạng từ: how, when, where và why. Ví dụ:

Ngoài ra cũng có một số cụm từ thường dùng được kết hợp bởi what, which và how với các từ khác. Câu hỏi cũng được thiết lập với các cụm từ này giống như với các interrogatives:
- what brand of, what kind of, what sort of, what about
- which one, which way, which apart of, which of you
- how much, how many, how often, how about
Các từ nghi vấn cũng có thể được sử dụng như các liên từ để kết hợp 2 mệnh đề với nhau. Tuy nhiên cũng cần lưu ý, câu được hình thành với các liên từ dạng này không nhất thiết phải là câu hỏi. Điều này phụ thuộc vào việc bạn đang muốn đặt câu hỏi hay chỉ là một câu thông thường.

Hãy lưu ý sự thay đổi về thứ tự của các từ giữa câu hỏi trực tiếp và một mệnh đề nghi vấn kết hợp với mệnh đề khác. Trong câu hỏi trực tiếp, động từ đứng trước chủ từ, còn trong mệnh đề nghi vấn, động từ theo sau chủ từ.

| When did they arrive? | I don’t know when they arrived. |
| How far can he swim? | They ask how far he can swim. |
