Forces of Nature – Các thế lực thiên nhiên, theo nghĩa rộng nhất, là thế giới tự nhiên, vật chất, vật chất hay vũ trụ. “Tự nhiên” có thể chỉ các hiện tượng của thế giới vật chất, và cả cuộc sống nói chung. Nghiên cứu về tự nhiên là một bộ phận lớn, nếu không muốn nói là duy nhất, của khoa học. Mặc dù con người là một bộ phận của tự nhiên, nhưng hoạt động của con người thường được hiểu là một phạm trù riêng biệt với các hiện tượng tự nhiên khác.
Mặc dù con người chỉ chiếm một tỷ lệ rất nhỏ trong tổng sinh khối sống trên Trái đất, nhưng tác động của con người đối với thiên nhiên là lớn một cách không cân đối. Do mức độ ảnh hưởng của con người, ranh giới giữa những gì con người coi là thiên nhiên và “môi trường được tạo ra” là không rõ ràng ngoại trừ ở các cực.
Ngay cả ở những cực điểm, số lượng môi trường tự nhiên không có ảnh hưởng của con người có thể nhận thấy được đang giảm dần với tốc độ ngày càng nhanh. Một nghiên cứu năm 2020 được công bố trên tạp chí Nature cho thấy khối lượng nhân tạo (vật liệu do con người tạo ra) lớn hơn tất cả sinh khối sống trên trái đất, chỉ riêng nhựa đã vượt quá khối lượng của tất cả các loài động vật trên cạn và biển cộng lại.
Và theo một nghiên cứu năm 2021 được công bố trên tạp chí Frontiers in Forest and Global Change, chỉ có khoảng 3% bề mặt địa cầu của hành tinh còn nguyên vẹn về mặt sinh thái và động vật, với ít dấu chân người và các quần thể động vật bản địa khỏe mạnh.
Thảm họa, thiên tai là một vấn đề nghiêm trọng xảy ra trong một khoảng thời gian ngắn hoặc dài gây ra thiệt hại về người, vật chất, kinh tế hoặc môi trường trên diện rộng vượt quá khả năng đối phó của cộng đồng hoặc xã hội bị ảnh hưởng bằng cách sử dụng các nguồn lực của chính mình.
Các nước đang phát triển phải gánh chịu chi phí lớn nhất khi thiên tai xảy ra – hơn 95% tổng số người chết do thiên tai xảy ra ở các nước đang phát triển và thiệt hại do thiên tai ở các nước đang phát triển lớn hơn 20 lần (tính theo phần trăm GDP) so với các nước công nghiệp .
